Pagan Deities and connections
In Cree we say mikisiw. The Cree do not have an eagle clan as some indigenous groups do. The eagle is a very powerful spirit and associated with strength, honor, and a connection to thunderbird. They also reflect dignity and responsibility.
Waŋblí (Lakota / Sioux): Waŋblí is the Sioux word for eagle. The eagle is considered a sacred spirit messenger who acts as the direct bridge between humans and Wakáŋ Táŋka (the Great Spirit). Because eagles fly higher than any other creature, the Lakota believe Waŋblí is the only entity to see the face of the Creator, carrying human prayers directly to the divine realm. Their feathers are treated with respect and carry meaning when given or worn.
Kwahu (Hopi): Kwahu is the Eagle Kachina (Katsina) spirit. He is a sky messenger and a "Cloud Bringer" who represents strength, keen vision, and guardianship. During sacred dances, a Hopi leader dresses as Kwahu, using specialized eagle-feather wings to petition the spirits for rain, moisture, and protection over their crop.
Kisosen (Abenaki): Kisosen is a solar deity whose name translates directly to "Sun-Bringer." He is symbolized as a massive, sacred eagle. In Abenaki cosmology, the day begins when Kisosen opens his expansive wings to let the light shine through, and night falls when he closes them.
